Indonesian defense minister on track for election win
Early unofficial tallies from Indonesia’s voting show Prabowo Subianto set for a first-round win with 58% of the votes according to four pollsters, with up to two-thirds of votes tallied so far.
A candidate only needs 50% of the vote to win without needing a run-off, and the next two candidates – Anies Baswedan and Ganjar Pranowo – garnered around 25% and 17% respectively.
Pre-election favorite Prabowo, who became known as a special forces commander in the 1990s under the feared leadership of Suharto, has lost the last two elections to incumbent Joko Widodo, who is unable to contest a third consecutive term under the country’s constitution.
